Choosing a Business Model for your Online Business

The Internet is grounds for all types of business models, both new and old. As the Internet evolves so will Internet commerce but one thing is certain, tried and true models will always be relevant. Lets take Auctions for example. The web has really popularized this form of brokering that has touched almost every century, every industry and every nationality occurring as far back as 500 B.C. You know eBay right, well that's one example of a brokerage business model. Lets touch on a few real fast.
  • Brokerage: In the simplest sense this business model brings buyers and sellers together to help facilitate transactions. Examples: eBay, Paypal

  • Merchant: Web based store front that offers goods and services. Examples: Amazon.com, Bestbuy.com and all the way to yourlittlestore.com

  • Advertising and Affiliate Model: These models are closely related in the sense that the website provides content and services usually free with the sole source of revenue coming in the form of advertising banners, text or image Adds. Examples: Yahoo.com, Google, and yourblog.com

  • Community Model: Revenue is based on the sale of ancillary products and services or voluntary contributions. Revenue may be tied to contextual advertising and subscriptions for premium services. Based on loyalty and the users investment in both time and emotion the Internet is well suited to the community business model as seen in today's rise of social networking websites. Example: Myspace, facebook, and yourcommunity.com

  • Subscription Model: Subscribers are charged a periodic daily, monthly, or yearly charge for the particular set of services a website provides. This business model is commonly seen with a free area and a members only area. Examples: Netflix, Internet Service Providers, Gaming, Content driven (pictures, video, audio, and downloadable software/tools)
These are some of the possible business models that you may utilize in creating your new online business. Its likely you will find that your business does not fall in just one model but perhaps several. For instance: You decide you want to create a online dating community with some free content, a subscription members only area, and the use of advertising as another source of income. In this instance you have a Community, Subscription, and Advertising Model.

OK, so now you might be thinking this is going to be hard but I assure you, I'm going to point you down some very simple paths. Once you start down the path you will start to understand why the path goes where it does. When you have your foot in the door of your business you will start to see how its run and it will lead to questions. With the questions will come curiosity and you will suddenly find yourself googling terms you never knew existed. As you evolve so will your business. To put it another way, I'm giving you blocks before you knew anything about building. Then you discovered Lego's on TV and imagined building a dinosaur before you had Lego's. Now your Lego's are bricks and with bricks, you can build dreams.

OK.....maybe just dream houses, I got a little carried away there, haha, so moving on then. Lets put our business models into sound business ideas. Which of the following sounds like you.
  • I want to sell on eBay
  • I want to sell a product/products but on my very own website domain
  • I want to blog about a paticular subject that I am both knowledgable and passionate about. In doing so I would like to earn money.
  • I want to build a Social Networking Community
For now we are covering these four options but may expand on these further in the future.

Creating your Own Online Business

OK, first things first, if you are looking for a get rich scheme then you are in the wrong place. If you are looking to make a little extra cash every month to help alleviate these difficult economic times then stick around. I am from the Detroit area and trust me, times are rough so every little bit helps.

That's not to say you cant make quite a bit of money following the information I'm about to share with you. You can, depending on you and how much effort your willing to put fourth you could easily replace your day job.

I want to be clear, this is not a get rich scheme and I am not going to try and sell you a product here. You are not going to scroll to the bottom and find the BUY NOW button that's going to guarantee you fast income. You are going to have to work for this but In the end, your work will put you in a position to do less and less work. Eventually, your business will run with little effort and it will run 24 hours a day. Imagine making sales while you are out on the golf course, eating dinner with your family, even sleeping in your bed. You can because with the magic of the internet your business stays open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

OK, so if I'm not selling you a store out of the box then what am I doing. Well first, I'm going to highlight the different ways to approach your new online business. Do you just want to sell on eBay or do you want your own website. Maybe you have a vast wealth of information on a particular subject and you just want to share it and monetize these efforts.

My plan is to open your mind up to the possible options for making money online and point you in the right direction at what seems to work and what don't. For me it was trial and error but sense I've walked the path I can point you toward useful tools and information. Some of the tools will be free, some will cost you. I recommend staying away from the tools that will cost you until you are already making a little money and then making a business investment.

OK, so speaking of business lets get down to business. When your looking to monetize the internet your first question should be......

WHATS GOING TO BE MY BUSINESS MODEL?

Its a simple enough question but it can lead you down a series of avenues and sense Ive already been down them perhaps I can share a little of what to expect. Lets start shall we.
